Something small but awesome

Posted by Kat in Rachel

Today is “Book Fair Day” for Rachel. I have been in excruciating pain with some infected exposed nerves in my mouth and was awake until just before 6am in more pain than anyone should ever go through. When I finally fell asleep, John let me sleep for 4 or so hours just so I could actually function today with work, the kiddos and hopefully drag my ass to get some antibiotics.

All that to say…

Rachel went to school this morning without her book money. (Credit goes to John for feeding, clothing, lunch packing and walking our girls to the bus on-time with two little boys in tow).

When I finally woke up, I drove to Rachel’s school with a $10 bill and went to the front office. The secretary, to my surprise, called Rachel from her classroom into the front office. This school is under a full renovation and construction and last year when I would drop stuff off, I’d leave it at the desk and they would get it to Rachel. Today, Rachel came to me.

She walked into the office and I called out “Rachel!!” and she said “Mommy!!!” and gave me a big hug. I watched her walk into the office for a brief moment before I called her name and the image of her face with a smile on her face, before she saw me and realized I was there. My child, My Rachel is happy.

I’ve worried about her for a long time. Seeing her happy (for no reason) face was worth a million words. I won’t forget that picture of her for as long as I live.

My girl is happy. *sigh*

About Me

TeamRachel aka mrskatvon is both a website to gain public awareness of Juvenile Batten Disease (which affects my oldest daughter) as well as a journal to remember the events in our lives. Rachel was diagnosed with Batten Disease in July 2009 and while we knew something was "not right" we had no idea that such a nightmarish disease existed. There are dozens of nasty, orphan disease which affect people both very young and old. Aside from dealing with the changes of Batten Disease in my daughter, Rachel, I have tasked myself with making life memorable for all of my children to make sure that (at least) 3 of them grow up to be as well adjusted and happy as possible.
