Thanksgiving 2009

Posted by Kat in Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving should be renamed: “Key Lime Pie Day.”

Today was a good day. Good food made by my Mom and awesome desserts made by my other half. Rachel had a good day today, she has been “entertaining” my cousin and his wife who are here from England. I spent 10 minutes watching her watch TV before bedtime tonight and was humbled by how much she overcomes on a daily basis and how truly little (very little) Rachel complains.

Life is so humbling if you stop and look around for a minute.

Love my kids. Love Key Lime pie. Anyone else out there love a good key lime pie? :)

Can’t think of anything to write about tonight. I still have a horrible cold / upper respiratory infection that seems to be a “super cold.” I have been having lots of irrational thoughts about never leaving the house again and wearing a face mask to check the mail. Definitely the virus “talking.” Julie thinks I need to wash my hands more. :)

The kids had microwaved hot dogs with ketchup for dinner. Kind of proves that I feel terrible.

Both Julie and London brought home “manilla turkeys” to decorate and I doubt that our dining room carpet will ever recover from all of the glitter it soaked up tonight. Julie’s turkey is so thick with glitter that I think it needs a custom piece of plywood just to support the weight.

Rachel had a good entrance and exit to school today. We brought Holly (our dog) to school with us and that most certainly lifted her mood and made the transition easier. I think I better bake some cookies for them tomorrow. You can never have a mom who bakes too many cookies, right?

Please remind me next year

Posted by Kat in Kat, Thanksgiving

That I cooked my ass off to make a wonderful meal and then clean it all up.  The turkey was perfect and the sides were all delicious (even the Green bean cassarole).   The kids were so grouchy despite the fact that dinner was served at 12 noon and I basically ended up eating with Rachel while John tried to juggle the “little kids” and he barely ate anything at all.  I am *NOT* going to do this again.  I am all about being “stress free” whenever possible and I have zero desire to repeat a traditional thanksgiving ever again.  I’m also looking into ordering chinese food on Christmas day.   Getting the kids to go to bed tonight was hellish (to put it lightly) because Julie was overstimulated from spending a few hours this evening at my Mom’s for pie.

The point of this wasn’t to bitch and moan on Thanksgiving Day because I am very thankful for what I have in my life.  I just wanted a written reminder to myself that while I am capable of being traditional, traditional Thanksgiving meals adds unnecessary stress to my life.Next year we are going to have three platters:  cheese/crackers, fruit/veggies and some other third thing.

Turkey is overrated.

Happy Thanksgiving…

Posted by Kat in Boston, Thanksgiving

With Rachel being a bit sick we opted to have Thanksgiving at home. We bought a last minute, 12 pound turkey this morning and plan to have a mid afternoon lunch.

Next year when I’m having baby fever, remind me how many things that Boston has gotten into and/or spilled. I love him and he loves to touch everything. :-)

About Me

TeamRachel aka mrskatvon is both a website to gain public awareness of Juvenile Batten Disease (which affects my oldest daughter) as well as a journal to remember the events in our lives. Rachel was diagnosed with Batten Disease in July 2009 and while we knew something was "not right" we had no idea that such a nightmarish disease existed. There are dozens of nasty, orphan disease which affect people both very young and old. Aside from dealing with the changes of Batten Disease in my daughter, Rachel, I have tasked myself with making life memorable for all of my children to make sure that (at least) 3 of them grow up to be as well adjusted and happy as possible.
